Of The Heart
Have you ever seen a rose
Swaying in the wind
Before an acidic plague
Swept across the land
And took everything
You once held for granted away?
No.
Have you ever held a baby
Gentle and cooing
In your tender care
Before that same wind
Came and took away before your very eyes
Leaving you empty handed and sad?
No.
Have you ever listened to your music
Dancing in step to the beat
To all of a sudden be left only with yourself
And the mind numbing experiences of your past?
No.
Consider yourself lucky
For there are those unlucky few
Who are blind, empty, or deaf.
Are you one of these people?
Possibly not.
For they have come,
Come farther than you
To be where they are now
And when you ask them
Have you experienced beauty?
They ask this of you:
Have you ever talked to someone
Not with tongue, but gesture
Telling jokes few even begin to grasp
For there lack of knowledge of my sign language?
No.
Have you ever read a book with your hand
Reading through history about racism
Only to meet a person like me
Who couldn’t care if you were white, black, blue, purple, yellow, or red
Because I see not the color of your skin,
But the color of your hart?
No.
But do these thing,
These disabilities,
These disadvantages,
Make me different in your eyes?
Yes
Do I feel more obligated to prove myself in the world?
Yes
And do I take pity on you?
Yes.
So ask me again if I’ve experienced true beauty and I’ll say
“Yes,
Have you?”
